Recessed alcoves where bread was left for pilgrims of old. This was ancient monastery & hospice built in 11th century. The Order based here was known for its ability to cure mediaeval scourge known as St Anthony's fire (a fungal skin disease often turning gangrenous leading to death). So far so good!!
